Care and Maintenance:

Just as you maintain the appearance of your car, powdercoated and glass surfaces need routine cleaning to remove dirt and grime. This ensures that you maintain the decorative and protective properties of the coating. Just a gentle clean wash with a soft brush and mild detergent followed by a fresh water rinse will maintain the long term performance of your powder coated products.

Warning: strong abrasive house hold cleaners and solvents including those recommended for thinning paints such as MEK or paint thinners are harmful to powder coating these must NOT be used. Acidic and alcohol based cleaning products should also not be used.

Compliance:

When installing you need to make sure you meet the stringent Australian Standards for Pool Fencing. These being:

AS1926.1 - 2007: This Standard specifies the requirements for the design, construction and performance of fences, gates, retaining walls, windows, doorsets and balconies intended to form a barrier that will restrict the access of young child to swimming pools.

AS1926.2 - 2007: This Standard sets out options for the location of safety barriers intended to restrict the access of young child to swimming pools.

The other Australian Standars our products comply with, and which a DIY installer must comply with include;

  • Stainless Steel Clamp complies with AS 1170 Structural Design Actions
  • 8mm-10mm Toughened Glass complies with AS/NZ 2208 - 1996 Safety Glazing in Materials
  • 12mm Toughened Glass complies with AS/NZ 2208 – 1996 Safety Glazing in Materials
  • 50mm Semi-Frameless Glass Pool Fencing System is installed to comply with AS/NZ 1926.1 Swimming Pool Safety Standard.
  • Frameless Glass Pool Fencing System is installed to comply with AS/NZ 1926.1 Swimming Pool Safety Standard
  • Glass Clamp complies to AS 1926.1 Swimming Pool Safety Standard and AS 1170 Structural Design Actions.
  • 8mm & 12mm Glass complies with AS 2047-1999 Windows in Buildings and AS 1288-2006 Glass in Buildings.

Please check out the Home Pool Safety Checklist for a good Australian Standard checklist.

Product Testing:

Structural integrity is paramount in safety railing. With this in mind, Dimension One Glass Fencing and Glass Hardware have comissioned a stringent series of tests of our products by approved testing agencies in Australia, which highlight how the system exceeds the high standards demanded by engineers.

Static Testing Results for Glass Clamps (Spigots):
Under average glass, grout, core drilled, and load systems, no deformations after test occured. Test showed that using a smaller width panel of glass will significantly increase the uniformly distributed load resistence. It is important that the wedges that are apart of the clamping system are correctly fixed to provide maximum friction grip between the 12mm thickened toughened glass and the clamp body.

Static Testing for Round or Square Semi-Frameless Aluminium Posts:
Test specimen designed for balconies, verandahs, stairways, pool fencing and enclosures using high grade strength aluminium 50mm glazing posts either round or square in geometric form. No deformation was shown when tested for wind rating uniformly distributed loads, held as per standard for 15 minutes. It must be stated that using a smaller width panel of glass will signifcantly increase the uniformly distributed load resistance.

How do you know your glass pool fence meets Australian Standards?

Australia has strong laws and high standards for glass pool fences and gates to protect children from drowning. There are two Australian standards for home pool safety: AS 1926 for pool fences and AS 2820 for pool fence gates. In all states it is mandatory to have an effective barrier around your pool.

The most important things are that your fence needs to be at least 1.2 metres high, you must have a self-latching gate that can self-close from any position and your fence must not contain any gaps larger than 100mm. You only require a handrail or top rail if there is a drop of one metre or more. I.e. the fence is going on a veranda that is a metre or more higher than ground level.

One of the additional benefits of choosing to use glass pool fencing is that, while glass fencing is extremely tough, it is also a difficult material to climb and doesn't have the gaps between palings that more traditional fencing can be prone to. Glass pool fences are very sheer and smooth and as such children will find the fence very difficult to climb, as there are no handholds or footholds to be accessed. You must also display an approved resuscitation sign near the pool.

The most important part of a pool fence is the gate which must be self-closing and self-latching. The hinge and latch must be designed to be reliable and durable in the tough, family pool environment with constant use and exposure to chemicals, water and the weather. The hinges must be NATA tested to be reliable for ten years. This means they must be tested for 10,000 cycles of opening and closing. All hinges that have been NATA tested are issued with a NATA certificate.

If your swimming pool is new, or existing, then the fence must be inspected and certified by the local council or building certifier before the pool is filled. We provide a compliance certificate on completion of your fence.

How strong is the glass used in our fencing?

Safety toughened glass is manufactured to AS/NZS2208 and 2080 and is Grade A safety glass as per AS1288 (you will find the certified stamp in the corner of the standard panels, however special dimension panels do not have the stamp). We use 10mm and 12mm thickness glass, and 8mm glass on gate panels. The glass edges are polished and arrised, making handling easier. Toughened glass is up to 500% stronger than annealed glass and is therefore more resistant to thermal breakage and can withstand greater wind loads. On rare occasions toughened glass can break for what seems to be no apparent reason. Most often however, breakage is usually due to surface damage or excessive loading on the toughened glass. Please see our video demonstration of toughened glass breaking to give you an idea of how it reacts when it breaks into small cubes, which are less likely to cause cuts.

How much maintenance is required?

As a pool owner you are responsible for the ongoing maintenance of your pool fence. All products placed in an external environmental require some form of cleaning; stainless steel is not maintenance free but maintenance friendly. Washing regularly will reduce the risk of tea staining. For best results wash with soap or mild detergent and warm water following by a cold water rinse. Glass can be cleaned with a bucket of soapy water.

Will the core drilling damage my tiles?

If care is taken, core drilling should not damage tiles. Removing the spinning core from the hole should be done sensibly. If the tile has not been originally glued down properly, there is a possibility it will crack.

How many frameless clamps do I need to use?

Two spigots are used to clamp one sheet of glass. If the sheet of glass is extensive, it is recommended additional clamps are installed to it.

Can you cut your feet on the cover plates?

Our spigot cover plates and rings are slightly raised, ensuring no sharp edges.

What panel widths are available?

We have many standard incremental sizes to suit most projects, however custom panels (known as special and raked panels) are made at a reasonable additional cost. Each project has its own individual traits, and Dimension One Glass fencing can solve “problem” areas using a range of solutions to provide anunbroken fencing eyeline.

How long will it take to install a glass pool fence?

Dimension One Glass Fencing endeavors to install your fencing as soon as possible, with a lead time of 10 working days from acceptance of our written quotation. Installation of the fence takes from one to two days depending on the size. Please be aware adverse weather conditions can cause delays. The dedicated team at Dimension One Glass Fencing will always do their upmost to ensure install of your fencing seamlessly and swiftly.

Can my pool gate open inwards towards the pool?

No, all pool gates must open outwards away from water to meet Australian Standards.

Installation Method for a Frameless Glass Fence

STEP 1 - Setting Out
Setting out is the most important stage of the installation as it determines the position of each panel & ensures that the glass is installed at the correct height, with the appropriate spacing between panels (if required).

1

STEP 2 - Core Drilling
Core drilling directly through the finished pavers/tiles enables a professional and clean finish as well as accurate holes for the placement of the spigots or posts. This part of the installation process ensures a quick and clean installation. Mounting to a deck or pavers is not advised for frameless glass because more support below is needed to ensure the fence complies with wind loading australian stanards.

2

STEP 3 - Standing the Glass Panels
Standing the glass panels occurs once the core holes have been drilled. The spigots or posts are placed in position, ready for the glass panels to be inserted.

3

STEP 4 - Straightening & Levelling
To ensure that the glass fence is straight and level, bracing is applied to the standing glass panels. This also ensures that the correct position of the glass fence is maintained.

4

STEP 5 - Grouting the Work
With the bracing in place, the fence is reaady to be grouted. Once the work has been grouted it is left to set, with the bracing still in place. Grout takes up to 24 hours to set completely, depending on the weather conditions.

5

Step 6 - Removing Bracing
Once the grout is set, the fence is ready to have the bracing removed in preparation for the finished product. Bracing is removed.

6

Step 7 - Finished Product
The gate is tensioned & adjusted. The site is cleaned and the glass washed down. The result is your modern, stylish and robust new glass fence.

Installation Method for a Semi-Frameless Glass Fence

STEP 1 - Liasion with Dimension One Glass Sales Team
Require exact measurements wall to wall or wall to post indicating any stairs or steps, plus the position of the gate so a Dimension One Sales person can work out the distance to the gate and glass sizes to suit fence length. Send a detailed plan to our office (fax 9627 4923 or email sales@dimensions1glass.com.au), to which we can return the position of the core drill holes and glass.

STEP 2 - Setting out and Core Drilling
Mark out the hole positions as per plan. Core drill 80mm deep, 80mm diameer goles.

STEP 3 - Placing Posts In Core Holes
Insert post upside down with the pocket filler installed. Picking highest point of paving, making sure the gap between the glass and ground is no more than 95mm high to comply with Australian Standards, mark out the bottom of the post with a texta cut/trim post to fit. Turn the post the correct way and level. Repeat for the accompanying post, and level together.

STEP 4 - Glass
Holding the glass panel with rubber seat installed in post, put rubber seat on pocket filler holding glass, and push/slide the glass gently into either post. It is recommended that timber blocks are installed under the glass to eliminate chipping if it falls out of pocket filler. Having cut small peices of rubber, wedge glass into post with rubber installed.

STEP 5 - Bracing
You are now about to install timber brace to hold the glass fence in place, and plumb level all panels to ensure a perfect finish. String line tied to each post helps ensure all glass is straight. Recommended cover plates are fixed up with gaffer tape before grouting. It is also recommended that you double brace the gate while hinges are screwed onto post. Gate can be adjusted after posts have set.

STEP 6 - Grout
Grout fence and leave to set until dry. The site is cleaned and the glass washed down. The result is your modern, stylish and robust new glass fence.
